Diaphragms
A diaphragm is a type of condom – but is worn by women instead of men. It is a thin rubber dome that has a flexible and springy rim which is inserted into the vagina. It is made to fit over the cervix and is held into place using the muscles in the vagina. This form of birth control is made with spermicidal – which will kill the sperm before they are able to fertilize the eggs.
After someone has had intercourse the woman should leave it in between six to eight hours. This is considered to be between 86-94% effective. In order to get one you need to be fitted at a clinic for one that fits right. It is up to your and your personal physician to find the most effective type and to choose between flat, arcing spring, and coil.
You will need to insert these at least two hours before you plan on having intercourse so that the spermicidal will be able to take effect. If it has been inside for more than two hours than you will need to apply more spermicidal into the area. In order to do this you will need to leave the diaphragm in and use a special applicator tool.
In order to make sure that this form of birth control is working and more effective you should learn how to properly insert it. It is important to practice inserting it and allow your personal physician to show you how. It can be awkward for many people – but the more you do it the easier it will become.
Make sure to apply a tablespoon of spermicidal jelly or cream on the inside of the dome and squeeze the rim to keep the spermicidal upwards. Do your best to make sure that small amounts of it or none at all is leaking out of it. The more spermicidal you have the better your chances are at it being effective.
